Pearls have been traditionally regarded as one of the most valuable gems. Over 6,000 years they have been used for adornment. Their legendary effects on people is the reason that since 2500 B.C. there was a substantial pearl trade in China. (1)
Ancient Greek legend thought that pearls were the tears of the gods. Pearls were associated with Venus, the Goddess of love, representing purity and integrity and loyalty of its wearer. Sea pearls come from oysters in the sea and from mussels in the rivers. The latter are the freshwater pearls. They are natural gemstones as they come from living organisms. She admitted in an interview, that the heavy pearl hand once fallen off its chain and she retrieved it from the mouth of her doggy. Seriously, the most expensive doggy chew toy in History! (3)
